Camp Invention

Post by Samir_Jain »

For our 2009 year we didn't do much in reaching out to the community. Yea, we did the can drive and all, but what I'm talking about here is reaching out to the young minds of our community. Camp Invention, if you don't know, is a wonderful camp where kids in elementary school go to for one week and are engaged in activities concerning imagination, building, taking apart electronics, inventions, physics based activities and the such. It's obviously a great starting place for children who want to be involved in a robotics team. I'm an alumni and i volunteered 3 years following that, and this year I have a job at the camp as a counselor.

Our high school robotics team *DID* take part in this Camp Invention. Here are some pictures!

You can see me in the 4th picture, behind the asian with the red shirt :P

Anyway, recently the whole camp invention had a staff change, so the PRHS robotics team did not take place in this due to the lack of communication and organization.
*Many* children and parents were really dissapointed in this, mainly because watching a robot doing anything, say picking up pyramids or shooting objects is extremely fun. IT introduces the children at Camp Invention to the whole concept of Robotics. If you don't know, *this* is the reason i wanted to join robotics, as I am now a member of it.

What I'm asking now is to get our robot at camp invention this year. Camp Invention at Mason Elementary is *this* week. Monday through Friday. It would be excellent if we could get a presentation to show our robot on Friday afternoon to end the camp with more excitement unlike last year.

Also, if anyone has any communication at all with the team at Hull Middle School for the Lego Mindstorms team, I would love to have them do a demonstration as well at ht camp, since that's where the kids are going first, and then our robotics team.

After talking further with Samir, he has notified me that we need to let the camp counselor know ASAP if we can do this.

I say that we should do it. I mean, we barely do anything for chairmans and the little we do can really help us.

We should probably bring the C-base as well. Just to show it off, and have it drive around.

The camp ends at 3:00 so we should probably be there at around 1:30 to present out stuff.

Since the robot can fire balls at some distance, it might be kinda cool to have this thing shoot balls into the crowd and stuff.

Um...yeah...

We should probably meet on Thursday just to get everything together, pack, make sure things run properly etc. so that come Friday, we don't hit any major roadblocks.

For transportation, I'm thinking that we'll need at least 1 car devoted to the robot(s).

We'll also need roughly 5 people at the actual event. At least 2 to drive the big bot, one to drive the c-base, and a couple to talk about the robot to the kids.

Tanner, we're probably need confirmation from Mr. Smith and I think it'd be nice to let Mrs. Strain know about this as well.

Whoever's historian will need to take pictures, as well bring a video camera for at least some footage for the chairmans video.

That's all my thoughts as to what we'll need. Once again, I think it's a great thing to inspire kids like this. And even if we can inspire a couple kids this early, then it'll still be a great thing.

The plan should work well that way, Sunny.

I'm the historian :P I'll try and take some good pictures, but video taking isn't exactly my expertise and i kinda suck at videos. If anyone else would like to do that instead, plase do so.

I think it might be a good idea if I came. This way it will show that girls are also involved on the team. [I also just really want to go.] :D This sounds like a wonderful idea, and I think we should do it. It will be great to inspire the children to become a part of robotics.

Heh. Yeah. We're doing this if we're getting the people for it.

Mrs. Strain has gone ahead and gotten all the stuff figured out for us (as far as I know), so all we need is people and robots. I know Mrs. Rutland is going.

And yeah - I know a email hasn't gone out yet, but I've been busy.

Ah...ok ok.

As far as people are concerned, I'll be there, Brittany and Samir have said they'll be there. I'm currently talking to Justin P. and see if he can come. So I believe that's more than enough.

Are we going to meet on Thursday to finalize everything and go over the bots?

The more the merrier. You can never have too many robo kids meeting to help build a world domination army. Make Randy proud.

Sounds like a good day to me, but it'd have to be finalized with Rutland first. I'll ask her.

If it is from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, not unless I skip lunch or get off work.
